Always work with the door down to prevent the door coming crashing down and causing damage and injuries. Unplug the opener, remove the new unit from the box along with all the parts. Assemble everything on the garage floor so that it can be spread out and assembled properly. Then, remove the old Genie. Cut down the opener rail and the drive chain by about 6 1/2″. Cut the rail down 6 1/2″ and then cut the chain down 13″.  Once you have it at a length that suits your garage door, install the new garage door opener chain drive.
